Staying on top of your routine during the holiday season is often easier said than done. Luckily, Integrated Fitness is here to help you stay on track, even when your rental apartment is full of delicious temptations and your calendar with party invites.
Plan One Active Outing for Every Holiday Celebration
Each time you add a social engagement to your calendar over the holiday period, add an active outing into your schedule as well. Go for a seawall walk with a friend, coordinate a family hike or sign up for a special workout class with a colleague before the office party. This simple practice will help keep your life (and the scales) in balance over the holidays!
Sign up for a New Year’s Race
Vancouver has lots of races happening in the first few months of the New Year. From 5km walks to half marathons, early season races are great because training will keep you focused on being active during the holiday season. Check out the upcoming race schedule here and set your 2020 goals today! Better yet, get some friends and family members to sign up with you for extra support and motivation!
Sleep More
Our bodies naturally want more sleep at this time of year, but we often burn the candle at both ends and get less sleep over the busy festive season. Sleep deprivation has been shown to lower leptin (an appetite-suppressing hormone) and increase ghrelin (a hormone that stimulates hunger). Both effects make it hard for us to moderate our consumption of those tasty cocktail party canapés and calorie-rich desserts. Help combat this by getting at least 8 hours of sleep a night – we guarantee you’ll notice the difference in both your mood and your ability to control your appetite.
Put Workout Gear on Your Gift Wish List
Nice workout gear really can make you feel better during a workout and be an incentive to get you moving. Those breathable, comfortable and flattering fabrics can get pricey though – add them to your gift wish list and let your friends and family give you the gift of better health this year!
Accept that it’s Just That Time of Year
At the end of the day, there’s no way around it – this time of year is about indulgence – so give yourself the freedom to enjoy it, too. Even if you implement just one of the four suggestions above, you’ll be ahead of the game when the New Year rolls around!
